Student-Led Parent Conferences

As you plan for the upcoming school year, it’s not too early to set goals for your teaching. Are there practices you’ve been thinking of that you would like to try this year? Maybe you weren’t ready before, but now you are ready to take a chance. Consider including student-led parent conferences in your assessment plan. These conferences are student-centered and help build partnerships with both students and their parents.

….a wonderful strategy that provides parents with an in-depth understanding of their child’s learning–student-led conferences. When a parent listens  as his or her child explains the work she has done and what she’s learned from it, displayed with artifacts from the experience, that parent can see very clearly just how the child is doing. It’s virtually a look inside the child’s head, not just a mark on a piece of paper.

Zemelman, S., Daniels, H., & Hyde, A. (2012). Best practice: Bringing standards to life in America’s schools (4th Ed.).  Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann.

We have two resources that will help you plan and get ready for conferences. It’s never to early to start making plans.

The One and Only Ivan Novel Study and Unit Plan

The One and Only Ivan is one of our favorite books. I’ve written about it before in Five Reasons to Read The One and Only Ivan in Your Classroom.

Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller, this stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. We Love Ivan

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been working on a new teacher resource for Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine Applegate.  This is the nonfiction picture book followup to the novel, The One and Only Ivan . . .  which we absolutely loved. We are excited about the new picture book too!!

ivan2

In spare, powerful words and evocative illustrations, Newbery medalist Katherine Applegate and artist G. Brian Karas present the extraordinary real story of a special gorilla.

Captured as a baby, Ivan was brought to a mall in Tacoma, Washington, to attract shoppers. Gradually, public pressure built until a better way of life for Ivan was found at Zoo Atlanta. From the Congo to America, and from a local business attraction to a national symbol of animal welfare, Ivan the Shopping Mall Gorilla traveled an astonishing distance in miles and in impact.

This is his true story. Photographs of Ivan are included in the back matter.

I discovered an awesome resource on the Ivan website. The We Love Ivan section provides a forum for classrooms to share projects they have created to celebrate Ivan and his legacy. Share your #WELOVEIVAN stories and pictures and see what other classrooms are doing.

Our Most Popular Product: Wonder Novel Study Discussion & Read-Aloud Guide

auggieThis is our most popular product and we absolutely love this book!

The novel study for Wonder by R. J. Palacio, includes a Discussion and Read-Aloud Guide, accompanying PowerPoint Presentation, a Literary Log for students, and bookmarks. The Discussion and Read-Aloud Guide is comprised of questions and prompts for each chapter and offers teaching suggestions, vocabulary, and prompts for students with suggestions for a variety of ways in which students might respond to these prompts: Teacher-Led Discussion, Pair-Share, Write-Pair-Share-Class-Share, and Individual Student Response. Prompts are designed to increase the relevancy of the novel and facilitate critical thinking. Many of the prompts could be used for longer writing pieces or mini-projects.

Students like to talk and this novel study engages and encourages discussion. It can be used with the whole class, small groups, individual students. An accompanying PowerPoint Presentation facilitates student activities and can be utilized by teachers or students. The Literary Log for students includes all the prompts and activities in both the Discussion Guide and PowerPoint Presentation.
